Post Script

Also, we are looking at taking this blog in a slightly different directions - more about women in pop culture, discussion of upcoming and favourite films, a space to discuss our favourite lady actresses and comedians, and a look at the place where entertainment and feminism intersect. Of course, our love for Krikki will continue - more as a dedication than a focus!

TwiCon, Here We Come!

Look out, Dallas! We're on our way.

Well, not actually on our way right now, as we are both sitting on my couch, on our laptops, being nerds. I'm emptying my camera of pics, gathering up peripherals and batteries and other technological bits and pieces, planning my knitting bag, and getting ready to sketch out a rough schedule of events. Bre is pretty well packed, but I still have clothes all over the joint. We have our costumes for the Volturi Masked Ball; a cooler chock full o' Smart Water; some grilled cheese sandwiches cooling down for the trip; and loads of good tunes for the ride. We just need an atlas and our trusty list of directions from Google maps and we are ready to roll!

I'm a bit nervous, and don't really know what to expect. We've anticipated this trip for so long that - as is my personal style - I forgot to truly get ready until the last minute! We've been joking for the last few months that we're going to be surrounded by squealing teenage girls, but that may not be entirely true. There are plenty of mature folks in the fandom - one of the breakout sessions is for Twilight Moms, after all - and it might be a great outlet for concentrated fandom. I've always wanted to go to ComicCon, but there are just so many pitfalls there ("booth babe" culture; the othering of female fans - e.g., either you're one of the guys thus erasing your female identity, or you're up for goody-oogling because OMG, LOOK YOU GUYS, A WOMAN, or you're invisible because you're not attractive enough, etc.) that I'd rather just go someplace where I'm genuinely excited about the fandom and feel invested enough to warrant the discussion and rampant nerdery that will follow. I also see it as somewhat of a social experiment. I've never been this deeply steeped in a fandom culture - I would love to take a look at it out on the playing field, as it were.

Enough dissection. I'm going to finish packing - expect photos, perhaps video if we can swing it, and some end-of-convention-day blogging!

Long Time, Not Much Posting!

Howdy to y'all out there in BlogFandomLand. It occurred to me that we hadn't really had much opportunity lately for blogging on our fave ladies - one of us has been on a knitting binge (and doesn't really update her knitting blog in a timely manner, either) and the other has had all sorts of computer-wackness and other obligations this summer. Never fear, though, we hope to get back on the blogging train and put some Krikki-love out there - especially in time for "New Moon"!

Also, we are attending TwiCon in Dallas at the end of July! We will be there, laptops at the ready, hoping to get some exclusives and interesting info that we can spill here. We've signed up for an autograph sesh with Ashley Greene and look forward to the many panels, especially one conducted with a Native Quileute storyteller, K. Anita Wheeler. We're pretty much geeked out about the formal programming - all sorts of interesting presentations about the intellectual side of "Twilight", and yes, we maintain that there is one!

Personally I've caught a bit of guff for planning to attend this event - for many reasons, including the topic, the price, the "unknown" nature of the celebrities in attendance. Ok, so Ashley Greene and Billy Burke aren't Leonard Nimoy, and the registration fee is a bit ka-ching, ka-ching. Don't get me started on "Twilight" haters! But - we love the books, we have great affection for the film (and therefore the actors in the project), and we also understand that starting a convention for a fandom that isn't well-established is a pricey prospect. With those things in mind, we see it as a worthwhile investment - and a pleasant holiday with a fun, nerdy agenda that we will enjoy!

So anticipate some end-of-convention-day blogging, pictures, and a renewed gusto for our gals Kristen and Nikki (and perhaps some side-nerdery about the upcoming movie "Whip It!" which we are ALL about right now... Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore and ZOE BLOODY BELL, oh my!).

Twilight Takes Home All the Popcorn

If you are a Twihard you were probably watching this years MTV Movie Awards because not only was Twilight and its actors nominated for a plethora of awards they also happened to show an exclusive trailer of New Moon on air. The second installment in the Twilight saga is set to be released on November 20, 2009. If you have not already seen the trailer trot on over and take a look.

Here is a link to the MTV website where you can watch the show in its entirety. The comedy was as always a bit crude, but the demographic that MTV aims for is always catered to shamelessly. Andy Samberg was mixing up his usual hyjinks with a small dose of misogyny. On a bright note Kristen Stewart bypassed the break out award that I was sure she would be nominated for and went straight for Best Female Performance winning in style. Here is a list of the awards won by Twilight or the actors.

Best Fight
Vampire Showdown
Robert Pattinson v.s. Cam Gigandet
Twilight

Best Kiss
Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson
Twilight

Breakthrough Performance Male
Robert Pattinson
Twilight

Best Femaile Performance
Kristen Stewart
Twilight

Best Movie
Twilight
Director Catherine Hardwicke

Here is a link to the acceptance speaches.

Rob and Kristen teased us when accepting their awards for best kiss with a little of that mojo that we all enjoyed so much in Twilight. It made me wonder how long in advance they planned it. Just as they were about to kiss Kristen pulled away and thanked the crowd for their award. Both Twilight leads were as awkward as usual and we love them that way. I am not sure if I have ever seen two actors who can cast quite the same stiff spell as these two. It always reminds me that this film series may be making Kristen Stewart’s career but it’s not where her heart is. She will always remain in the realm of grunge and independence.

As for Rob, he exhibited the same charming dorkiness and overuse of hair gel that he brings to any appearance. How could he not be endearing to the viewers with his blue blazer and high pitched laugh? Maybe this can explain his large appeal with the ladies who screamed any time he was in any way involved in the festivities. In addition, the rest of the Twilight crew were seated right behind Jim Carey and gained an awful lot of the crowd shots that were spattered throughout the evening.

Though Twilight is certainly a straight commodity I think we queers have claimed our fare share of its brilliance. I have been convinced of this by the sheer amount of references to Twilight’s success at the movie awards on queer sites. It is all thanks to a lovely lady called Stephanie

Ellen Page or Kristen Stewart?

Choices, we make them every day. Things such as; apples or oranges, right or left, and Canada or Hollywood. As I was cruising around the usual sites looking for some Krikki goodness, I noticed a theme occurring. People were being asked to make a choice, and according to most it was an easy choice one way or the other: Kristen Stewart or Ellen Page... that was the title of the blog I found hidden away within the huge vault of lesbian web information known as After Ellen.

Let me first say that I love both actresses. My love of Kristen Stewart is new compared to Ellen Page, but she has swarmed all over number one in my tomboy/baby butch young actress category. What I got from the posts that I found were mostly about who was hotter, but I thought, being the super fan nerd girl that I am, I would dig a little deeper and compare their filmographies, clout, and presence. One might say that Ellen's oscar nod puts her in the lead, clout-wise, but if you look at the phenomena that has been created by the "Twilight" film, just about any project that KStew takes part in has a guaranteed audience. The sort of projects that KStew has expressed interest in doing, little indie films that never see the light of day, are now actually getting distributed. One can just look at "The Cake Eaters" as an example. That film would not have garnered the amount of attention it deserved if it had not been for a little thing called capitalization on Twifame. So while she may owe her clout to Twilight she has shown that she has the talent and willingness to take those roles that have layers and guts. After this I must take you back to "Hard Candy". This film proved that Ellen Page has goolies and can carry a thriller with the sort of elegant bloodlust that usually isn't seen in one so young.

The next category is completely up to personal preference. While I think both girls are adorable with their tomboyish fashion senses and laid-back manners, Kristen Stewart has this deep, anguished look in her eyes that could make a grown biker cry just by looking at her. Again, that was personal observation talking but I have it under good authority that others have noted this fact as well. I love, love, love Ellen Page and her unique persona but the gravitational pull of a quietly tortured young KStew beckons from inside those green eyes.

Having outed myself as someone who spends way too much time looking at pictures while researching for blog posts I will end that particular line of insanity right there. At the end of the day it is all up to you to answer this pressing and important question for yourself. Hold on, you have a little sarcasm in your eye. Let me help you with that. If anyone is actually reading this, feel free to give your answer to our question... come now, don't be afraid... Kristen or Ellen?

Finally, Some Actual Krikki News!

Courtesy of L.Goss, a write-up and some photos of my man Jackson playing with his band, 100 Monkeys. They had a gig in Vancouver and, sweetly enough, some of the Twilight/New Moon cast came out in support. The key item:

As for the others – am told Kristen and Nikki apparently seemed completely smashed, were having a great time, totally inseparable. Had dinner first with Taylor, then walked over to the venue together, and spent most of the show in the front row (short video is below).

Ha, that makes me really happy: date night in Krikkiville. The video is quite short but worth watching for hilarious Nikki-ness!

Kristen and... John Corbett? Ok...

I'd like to think that I'm not turning the Krikki blog into a Lainey Gossip aggregator... but her photo posts about the Twilight kids are second to none. So here's another set, this time of Kristen, John Corbett, some of the Wolf Pack (eh) and a whole lotta Vitamin Water. Enjoy!

Krikki Goss Round-Up

Reliable gossip royalty Ted Casablanca has this video up showing the "New Moon" cast exiting a restaurant on Kristen's birthday... and Kristen is holding hands with Jackson. Kids! Come on! I have stated before that this is the Krikki blog, not the Krackson blog - we need something to go on, here... though the article accompanying the video also makes mention of K.'s boyfriend not exactly being on the scene. Even for her birthday? That's cold, Beardy. (BTW - loved you in "Sky High", so don't think that we're haters.)

Meanwhile, Access Hollywood has a wee skerrick of info up about the birthday dinner.

And last but not least, Darling L. has a new set of photos up, giving some love to the rest of the cast including the ever-charming Peter "Slow Your Roll!" Facinelli and Elizabeth "Rowr" Reaser. Nice!

What's Nikki Up To These Days?

I feel like we really haven't been showing Nikki the love, so here's a quick hit via Gossip Girls: a sweet set of pics from April 7 of Nikki out and about with Kristen's boyfriend/beard (potayto, potahto)... I love her cute stripey cardigan!

There really hasn't been a whole load of news about Nikki, other than speculation that she is secretly dating Robert Pattinson (a.k.a R.Pattz, as we like to call him here at Krikki HQ). Gosh, walk somebody back to their hotel and suddenly you're an item... Marc Malkin at E! says that they are definitely not dating, but he seems to be going on less information than any of the other gossip columns!

In related news, we offer up a wee plug for the After Ellen Hot 100. Voting is open until April 24th, and we urge all gay, bi or otherwise queer-identified ladyfolk to go forth and put in your $0.02 on the hottest women out there! (Of course we both cast votes for both parts of darling Krikki, but don't let us influence you in any way... *wink*)

Happy Birthday Kristen, Part II: Electric Twilightaloo

First, although this isn't a "Twilight" blog per se, I do make it a point to periodically check out the Twilight tag on Lainey Gossip. She's like a funnier, smarter, definitely more coherent Perez Hilton (whom I find so odious I won't even spare him the hyperlink - the douchehound) and actually provides incredible candids on the daily (without the need to write crappy Paint captions on them). In doing so, I found the latest motherlode on my boy and yours, Jackson. Swoon. It's all very, "Aw, honey, did I leave my boots under your bed? No, I remembered them just as I was about to walk out the door. My bad, ma'am... you have a delightful day."

But, this isn't "Krackson Watch", so let's move on to my "secondly"... which is Kristen's birthday. Where were you when this whippersnapper was born? I was being tormented weekly by Mrs. Clark, Worst Grade Five Teacher Ever. It makes me a little sad to know that someone who was born in 1990 is walking around being a grown-up, but there it is.

Anyway, happy birthday KStew, without whom this blog - and our unrelenting girlcrush - would not exist. May your future be brightly lit and filled with fulfilling indie projects as well as high-profile fun fluff!

"I know you don't like the attention, but at least try to look surprised when they all jump out from behind the couch. It's also a costume party, so here's the plan: you can be Shane McCutcheon: The Wonder Years; I'll be Cindy Crawford, If Cindy Crawford Was A Mid-'90s Lesbian. Then we can have cake. Possibly in bed. Okay?"

Happy Birthday Kristen!

In case we forget, it's KStew's 19th birthday tomorrow... and to celebrate, we had a bit of fun with a Twilight display. Robert Pattinson is wishing Kristen a happy birthday!

You can't really see the text in the speech bubble so here is a little breakdown.

Rob: Happy Bday Kristen... WHARRGARBL

We can never tell what he is saying when he is being musical. Enunciate when you sing Rob... just sayin'

The Cake Eaters

In an attempt to catch up with Kristen Stewart's entire back catalogue, we sat down to watch "The Cake Eaters". I will admit, I didn't really expect much out of this film - there were only a few copies available to rent and I hadn't heard anything much about it. If you look at the DVD cover you'll notice that Kristen Stewart's face is displayed prominently, which makes it seem like the studio is capitalising on her sudden popularity via "Twilight" in order to promote the film*. This is a clever move - I probably wouldn't have even noticed it, if not for our interest in all things Kristen!

The movie has no real central character - they are all as important as each other in telling the story, but Kristen turns in a moving performance as Georgia, a 16 year old girl afflicted with a genetic neurological disorder called Friedreich's Ataxia. Her mother, step-father and grandmother all take care of her but you can see how much she wishes to escape the constant supervision as much as the burden of her disease. Her counterpart in the movie is Beagle, a man who lives with his father after they lose his mother to diabetic complications, and the family's prodigal son, Guy, who returns home after failing to establish a music career in New York. The movie was written by Jayce Bartok, who plays Guy, and was directed by Mary Stuart Masterson. It's a quiet tale, one told with sensitivity and realism. The touchy subject of adolescent sexuality, especially as it applies to disabled youth, is handled with dignity. I definitely recommend it even if you are not necessarily a fan of Kristen.

This interview with Jayce Bartok explains the name of the film.

*Relating to this theory, the official 'The Cake Eaters' blog will give you an opportunity to win a free movie poster.

Gossip Queen Article

I just wanted to post this article on Kristen & Nikki. It was like pulling teeth to get to this actual post for me for some reason. I had to wade through the other posts about Rob Patz and Kristen Stewart and their "secret love affair". While in the process I also found an article about a love triangle between the three. The issues I have with gossip sites are numerous but I think the most important thing to point out is that this is where some fans get their news. A lot of misinformation gets passed around by those who choose not to think about what they are actually reading. It makes me a little nutty when I see random posts on websites that have nothing to do with anything but people wanting a doll to dress up. These people are not public property. Yes, their lives are laid open for public consumption more frequently because of their chosen profession. I am not denying the fun of gossiping about our favorite stars, but what I would point out is that this kind of disrespect of human lives is what brands us as insensetive hypocritic as a society. To the point, I am finding more and more on the Krikki coupling, which is kind of scary/funny. I always knew that we were an exploitative culture but now that I have been reading all of these blogs it has smacked me in the face.

Jaspercake!

I am ill-equipped to state how fucking awesome this cake is. It is so full of win that I could barely bring myself to stop photographing it and start eating it. The pictures don't really do any justice, but this at least will go on the record for proving the existence of a Jasper cake and hopefully help turn the tide of Bella and Edward cakes (boring! Predictable!) towards lesser-appreciated but incredibly stellar character cakes.

It also makes me a bit verklempt because I could not have imagined a lovelier birthday tribute from my sweet sweet loved ones. Thank you so much, you crazy kids. xxoo

P.S.: Though of all the Bella and Edward cakes I've seen, this one is by far the greatest. There are 27 more Twilight cakes featured here.

P.P.S.: Yes, this is a blog for Krikki, but because it's a JasperCake post... here's some sweet pics of Jackson Rathbone! Ok, back to your regularly scheduled Krikki action...

Adventureland

So, Sam and I went to see Adventureland today for her birthday. Let me say it was pretty damn near more awesome than anything I have seen in theaters this year. Actually, we all loved it and appreciated the subtlety of the last scene. You don't have to do the obvious sex scene every time... thank you!I do think that the credits should be changed to Kristen Stewart as herself. It was brilliant. This is not really Krikki related but I do wonder if the girls had met near the filming of this. *sigh* Ask Sam about the Jasper cake...

This one's for B.!

My Introduction

The world is full some of the best things such as; cats, turkey, Zoƫ Bell, and internet phenomenons. I recently became aware of one these phenomenons and it was called NikkiStew. I had no idea who Kristen Stewart was until I became aware of Twilight but I've known of Nikki Reed since Thirteen. Even though that movie is not particularly gay it is on most must watch movie lists for young lesbians. Now we come to the point. I noticed the affectionate manner in which KStew and Nikki act with each other awhile back and gave it no thought other than some friends are just like that. I think it can range from people who just enjoy touching each other and seek comfort in affection to what is called a passionate friendship. The latter situation is the kiss of death for us lesbians who tend to fall for straight girls. The blatent nature of their displays was slightly facinating to me but what I found even more facinating was that one day last week i was reading After Ellen and stumbled upon the organized nature of the NikkiStew phenom. For anyone who does not know After Ellen it is one of the best lesbian websites on the net. There is an article there about "K-11", the upcoming gender bender of a movie that KStew and Nikki are starring in togther. Also there was a golden link... golden in my mind. It was the key to the NikkiStew universe. Wow, I forgot how detail oriented lesbians engaging in les/bi speculation can be. I started laughing hysterically and with great joy that I had found something so wonderful. Now, I agree with my good friend Sammy about the name NikkiStew. In fact the whole porno roast thing was pretty much the first thing that popped into my mind when I heard it. I don't want to take away from those who came up with that name but I chose to use Krikki since I think it is a beter representation of the comical side of the issue. Basically, I think what I am trying to do here is blog about people blogging about this bff couple while at the same time blogging about the subject itself from a slightly different perspective than is currently presented. That was my rather lengthy and less sarcastic than usual explanation of why I came up with the idea for this blog. Thanks to Sammy for coming up with her favorite, (and one of mine), pics for the graphic. -B

Inaugaural Krikki Post

So... Nikkistew. It seemed like a cool enough nickname at first, the cutesy amalgamation of Nikki Reed and Kristen Stewart. Until it started to conjure images of a pornographic film featuring Kristen slow-cooking Nikki like a succulent roast, and other less-graphic but still disturbing mental projections. (Personally, I find it to sound vaguely filthy in a way I can't quite put into words; I imagine the filmy scum left on the inside of a pressure cooker after creating some kind of meat-and-veg concoction.)

So, my intrepid co-blogger B. and I decided on "Krikki": it's a fair division (both from first names), and seems to possess a certain pizazz that "Nikkistew" fails to achieve.

For introductions: we are two women eagerly awaiting more news on the mysterious, ambiguous, touchy-feely development between BFFs Kristen Stewart and Nikki Reed. We are both "Twilight" connoisseurs, both book and film, and definitely fans of the aforementioned ladies and their blossoming friendship. This is our space to highlight, analyse, and speculate wildly about the pair - and possibly other things relating to the "Twilight" saga. We will deliver the news to you, where-ever or however we might find it!
